Parents may register students for transitional kindergarten (TK) and/or kindergarten (K) at Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy January 25, 2018.  After January 25, transitional kindergarten and traditional kindergarten registration will be ongoing at the main office of the Sausalito Marin City School District traditional public school, Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy.
 
Children must be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2018 to register for fall kindergarten.
Children must be 5 years old between September 2, 2018 and December 2, 2018 to register for fall transitional kindergarten.

Transitional Kindergarten Program
The Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program is for "young fives" (children turning five from September 2 through December 2) displaced from kindergarten by the new entry date.
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is intended to bridge the preschool years wiht the conventional kindergarten year.  Enrollment in Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is voluntary.
Sausalito Marin City School District Transitional Kindergarten Program
  • Enrollment in TK is voluntary (as is kindergarten).
  • TK will be taught by a credentialed elementary teacher who will provide instruction in all curricular areas
  • Location:  For the 2018-2019 school year, Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy
  • Hours:  For 2018-2019, TK hours are identical to the kindergarten schedule, including a a 45 minute lunch period.  
  • No transportation/bus service will be provided.
  • The SMCSD does not offer before or after school childcare programs for students in TK.
Who is eligible to be enrolled in Traditional Kindergarten (regular Kindergarten)?
  • A child must be five years old on or before September 1, 2018 to enter kindergarten in the 2018-2019 school year and thereafter.
Who is eligible to be enrolled in Transitional Kindergarten (TK)?
  • All children whose 5th birthday falls on September 2 through December 2 are eligible to enroll in the TK program in the 2018-2019 school year.
  • TK enrollment will be limited to only those children who are age-eligible (with 5th birdays from September 2 through December 2, 2018).
  • All chidlren who are five years old on or before September 2, 2018 will be eligible for kindergarten entry and not the TK program.
What is the Transitional Kindergarten program?
The Transitional Kindergarten (TK) year is intended to be the first of a two-year kindergarten experience for those students who are enrolled in a TK classroom.  The focus of year one of the TK program is on exposure to, not master of, kindergarten skills and standards.  The classroom setting will meet the developmental needs of young children.  The expectation is that students who are enrolled in the TK program will participate in a regular or traditional kindergarten program during the following school year.

What is the class size of each Kindergarten?
 
Kindergarten class size varies each school year and depends on the fluctuation of students who register balanced with those who move away in any given year.
What are the Kindergarten hours?
 
Students attend from 8:15 am to 2:00 pm., except on Wednesdays when students attend from 8:15 am to 1:40 pm.
What is the curriculum and instruction?
 
Classes provide a balance of teacher-directed and child-initiated activities in with the Common Core Standard for Kindergarten.  The learning process is an active one in which students engage in cooperative, hands-on experiences. To learn the specific standards covered click here.
The curriculum is supplemented  and supported by The Center for Arts Excellence, art, music, drama.
How do I know if my child is ready for Kindergarten?
 
Your child's preschool teacher or transitional kindergarten teacher is your best guide but social/emotional maturity can play a big part in kindergarten success.  Children you can already take turns, share with others, delay gratification, cooperate and sit and listen for 10 to 1 minutes are usually developmentally ready for kindergarten.  In the spring you and your child will be invited to an orientation.  If you remain uncertain about readiness, you can speak to the kindergarten teachers at that time.
Is before and/or after school child care available?
 
Bayside Martin Luther King Jr. Academy does not offer before school child care.  Students are allowed to arrive to school as early as 7:45 am.  Kindergarten students are are eligible to participate in our high quality after school programs and activities provided by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma and Marin Counties.  Once your child has been registered, parents will receive information and registration guidelines from the Boys & Girls Club about their programs.
